The Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative(MLPSI) in St. Paul's Senior National School
We are delighted to be learning Spanish as part of the Modern Languages in Primary Schools(MLPSI). St. Paul's joined the MLPSI in 1998 and since then all students in 5th and 6th classes have been studying Spanish with a native speaker.
The MLPSI state that 'learning a language can develop self-esteem and confidence and enhance cultural awareness. Younger children are very receptive to new experiences. There is an educational value in that more time spent on a language means improved pronunciation skills and communicative competence in the long-term. It can promote autonomous learning. Across Europe many countries introduce a foreign language in third class of primary school education. In Ireland many schools already offered a foreign language as an extra curricular option outside the main timetable'.
